Abstract: |
The manual "Lingua Latina. Topics in latin language and roman culture. Anthology of texts for the late respublica" serves as the main academic textbook for courses in the Department of Philology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, focusing on teaching Latin language, and possibly also for similar courses in other departments across the country. Based on an anthology of authentic texts mainly from classical Latin literature, it develops topics of grammar, syntax, and translation of Latin, which are important for understanding the structure and peculiarities of the Latin language, drawing from many years of experience. Special emphasis is given to aspects of these topics that are inadequately developed (or not at all) in the commonly used valid textbooks on Latin grammar and syntax in Greece. Teaching is primarily based on a series of texts, all concerning the particularly critical period of the end of the Roman respublica (the last pre-Christian century until 31 BC). Thus, the manual also contributes to students' incomplete knowledge of Roman history and culture with critical information. Before each text, a brief introductory note provides the necessary historical and philological information for understanding the text and its context. Each text is accompanied by lexical and pragmatic observations, translation and translation notes, grammar exercises, syntactic theory, exercises in reverse order (translation from Greek to Latin), and additional text for further practice. The manual also includes an introduction and general bibliography, while it is enriched with images (artistic representations, maps), tables (chronological, etc.), and audio files. The majority of this material is used interactively so that the relevant information is readily available to the reader/user where needed.
