Description:
Abstract:
The manual "Lingua Latina. Topics in Latin Language and Roman Culture. Anthology of texts for the late respublica" is intended to serve as the main academic textbook for courses in the Department of Philology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, focusing on the teaching of Latin language, possibly also for similar courses in other departments across the country. Based on an anthology of authentic texts mainly from classical Latin literature, topics of grammar, syntax, and translation of Latin will be developed, which we consider important for understanding the structure and peculiarities of the Latin language, drawing from our many years of experience. Special emphasis will be given to aspects of these topics that are inadequately developed (or not at all) in the commonly used valid textbooks on Latin grammar and syntax in our country. The teaching will be primarily based on a series of texts, all of which concern the particularly critical period of the end of the Roman respublica (the last pre-Christian century until 31 BC). Thus, the manual will also contribute to the students' incomplete knowledge of Roman history and culture with critical information. Before each text, a brief introductory note will be provided, offering the necessary historical and philological information for understanding the text and its context. Each text will be accompanied by lexical and pragmatic observations, translation and translation notes, grammar exercises, syntactic theory, exercises in reverse order (translation from Greek to Latin), and additional text for further practice. The manual will also include an introduction and general bibliography, while being enriched with images (artistic representations, maps), tables (chronological, etc.), and audio files. The majority of this material will be used interactively so that the relevant information is readily available to the reader/user where needed.
