Abstract: |
This chapter discusses the increasing significance of Africa in the global economy. Despite its small share in international trade, the rapid growth rates of many African countries, significant increase in international investments, and the rise in international prices of commodities suggest a potential change in Africa's position on the global economic map in the coming decades. The chapter examines current trends and documents the estimates of international organizations and studies regarding the future. Special emphasis is placed on Africa's importance for specific sectors such as commodities, agricultural production, banking services, and mobile telephony. Finally, it analyzes international development aid and its role in poverty alleviation within the continent.
