Description:
Abstract:
During the Cold War period, Africa was a battleground for competition between the two superpowers, primarily through proxy wars. This chapter describes how the West supported authoritarian regimes solely based on their anti-communist stance. Particularly in the Horn of Africa and former Portuguese colonies, hundreds of thousands of Africans lost their lives in cold war conflicts. The chapter also analyzes how fluctuations in tension and détente between the superpowers influenced internal developments in Africa.
