Abstract: |
Solvents are a class of chemical compounds that allow chemistry to occur. The concept of a solvent has significant ramifications because they serve as the matrix, medium, or carrier for solutes. They are necessary in a number of processes, reactions, and systems. Despite their widespread application, organic (petrochemically produced) solvents are associated with economic and environmental issues, as well as health and safety issues. The alternatives that are currently available concern the application of production processes without the presence – use of solvents or more efficient recycling and reuse of existing solvents or replacing them with other less toxic ones, e.g. with the "green" solvents.
