Description: | |
Abstract: |
Cities, due to the economic and general socio-political crisis, are currently experiencing rapid and intense changes recorded in all aspects of urban development: the local economy, the social structure, the urban environment, the geographical distribution of activities, land management. The book 'Sustainable Cities: Adaptation and Resilience in Times of Crisis' attempts to analyze and interpret the particularities and problems of modern cities, as well as to address the issue of the necessity and continuous adaptation of spatial planning to meet the conditions of sustainable urban development and shield cities against future violent fluctuations. Understanding the impact of the crisis on the structures, pace and character of cities is essential to identify the policies and tools needed to contribute to urban resilience and sustainability. The approaches, arguments and examples presented are of a general nature with emphasis on the recent European and Greek experience. The book is structured in three main axes, identified by the context of the multidimensional nature of the current crisis: (a) the changing geographies of cities shaped by the spatial consequences of the crisis, (b) methods, tools and policies for the management of urban development and urban land, public and private, (c) the perceptions and practices of spatial planning and their role in sustainable development and the resilience of cities. The book is addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of spatial planning, urban development, economic geography and other social sciences and generally to individuals involved in the formulation and implementation of decisions, policies and programs focusing on the quality of life in modern cities.
