Description:
Abstract:
This chapter examines one of the most widespread and subversive motifs of Roman love elegy, the "militia amoris" (service in love). The transfer of vocabulary and imagery from the realm of war to the erotic field is central to the elegy’s exploration of the incompatibility between the elegiac/private life and the political/public life in Rome. The analysis of each elegy is structured as follows: Introduction, Text, Vocabulary, Translation, Notes/Commentary.
