Abstract:
Some of the most common applications of derivatives are summarized in one chapter. Some of them are familiar from high school. The rest are new: 1) We show how we can easily calculate the values of a function, approximately, based on the values of the function and its derivative at a nearby point. The aim is to clarify the geometric interpretation of the derivative. 2) We see Newton's method as another method of locating roots, after the bisection method. The comparison of the two methods has great educational value. 3) The concept of convexity is introduced, according to the widely accepted definition (i.e., in convex functions, the chords lie below the graph of the function). 4) We study Hospital's Rule.
