Abstract:
Reference is made to the role and importance of PT in the urban environment and to the broader issue of integrating a PT system into the urban space. PT systems are classified into categories and considered with reference to their specific characteristics. Reference is also made to the competitiveness and sustainability of urban transport and the importance of the legal, institutional, and economic environment of the urban area in which a PT system is to operate. The basic levels of BRT design and their interaction with other urban transport systems are described. Reference is made to the design and operation of the various components of an ITS network, such as terminals, bus lanes, stops, as well as the manner and methods by which they are evaluated. Finally, the methodology for calculating the level of service in BRT systems is presented, and issues such as the concept of quality in BRT systems, passenger satisfaction, etc. are addressed at a basic level.
