Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the basic characteristics of travel in urban areas, its spatial and temporal separation, the differentiation of travel by purpose and means of transport, and the monthly/seasonal variation in travel. It provides a definition of sustainable urban mobility and presents the components of a sustainable urban transport system with references to the combined policy of spatial, urban and transport planning. In addition, national and European policies for sustainable urban mobility are presented, listing the objectives and means adopted to achieve the broader vision of sustainable development, such as sustainable mobility indicators. Finally, reference is made to Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP) as an essential tool for the integrated strategic planning of transport in urban centers, with simultaneous interventions to regenerate and improve the urban environment.
