Abstract: |
In chapter 5, methods for analyzing the relationship between two or more variables are presented, correlation and regression analysis in particular. Correlation analysis examines the relationship between two or more variables and measures the strength and direction of the relationship. Regression analysis is based on correlation analysis and concerns building a model in order to explain or predict the variation in one variable using one or more explanatory variables. Regression analysis has important applications in spatial data and spatial regression models have been developed which incorporate the concept of spatial autocorrelation. In this chapter, measures of spatial autocorrelation are presented which employ techniques for the mathematical representation of neighboring locations in the geographic space, through the creation of spatial weights matrices. Different models of spatial regression are introduced which are calculated in a GIS environment and consider the location of observations into the statistical framework of a regression, incorporating spatial autocorrelation.
