Description:
Abstract:
This chapter serves as an introduction to modern Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Systems (T&D Systems). It describes the main changes that have occurred in traditional T&D systems, leading to their modern counterparts. These changes involve equipment, operation, and the development of T&D systems. At the equipment level, notable examples include flexible transmission and distribution systems. At the level of operation and control, key elements include phasor measurement units (PMUs), telecommunications and information technologies for the optimal operation and control of smart grids and microgrids, as well as renewable energy sources and distributed generation, which have shaped modern active distribution networks in contrast to traditional passive ones. Operational changes also impact the development of T&D systems. Furthermore, the liberalization of the electricity market has made the development of T&D systems even more complex.
