Abstract: |
The transfer of free vascularized tissue (flap) is the most reliable method for reconstructing large defects. In addition to free flaps, pedicled flaps are also used, and in recent years, perforator-based flap techniques have been developed. Soft tissue flaps may be cutaneous, subcutaneous-fascial, or muscular. The primary indication for flap transfer is a tissue defect or the presence of compromised tissue due to trauma or pathology that cannot be treated with simpler methods. Other indications include improving local circulation with a muscle flap in the treatment of osteomyelitis and radiation necrosis. Indications vary depending on the location and size of the affected area, as well as the quality of the surrounding tissues.
