Description:
Abstract:
In this introductory chapter, we present the discussion concerning the origin and delimitation of literary genres. Specifically, we answer key questions such as: what we define as a literary genre, why we need the categorization into literary genres and types, what difficulties one faces when trying to classify a literary work into a literary type, and ultimately, to what extent the distinction into literary types is problematic yet necessary. We refer to the necessity of linking literary genres with their historical context and highlight the historical development and historicity of literary genres.
