Description:
Abstract:
This chapter presents the major changes that take place in the landscape of literary genres during the 19th century, emphasizing the program of the Sturm und Drang movement and German Classicism. It then outlines the Romantic movement, as its demand for a “subjective” poetics from a pan-European perspective marks the definitive end of normative poetics (see Romantic mixing of genres, unfinished works, etc.), as well as the birth of national literatures, i.e., new descriptive poetics. Special attention is given to the historical novel, as well as to historicism and Hegel’s aesthetics. Finally, the literary programs of Realism and Naturalism are presented, which create the conditions for the flourishing of literary genres such as the short story. The chapter closes with excerpts from relevant theoretical and literary texts and in-depth exercises, a summary, and bibliography.
