Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, we present the main literary genres during the Hellenistic Period, Roman Antiquity, and the Middle Ages. We emphasize the new dimensions that literary genres take during these periods, such as the epic with historical background and didactic content, the tragedy that evolves due to the flourishing of rhetoric, and the comedy that acquires new structure and themes. We introduce ancient and medieval romance, which develops into a dominant literary genre, as well as the emergence of new genres like mime and mimiambs. The chapter concludes with excerpts from relevant theoretical texts, in-depth exercises, a summary, and a selective bibliography.
