Description:
Abstract:
In this chapter, we examine the transition from orality to literacy and simultaneously present the concepts of Poetics and Rhetoric. We explain their usefulness as toolkits for classifying, describing, and analyzing literary texts. Within this framework, we make special reference to the concepts of Aristotelian mimesis, myth, and the notion of Aristotelian narration, as well as to the three major literary genres by way of example: epic, drama, and poetry. The chapter concludes with excerpts from relevant theoretical and literary texts, in-depth exercises, a summary recap, and bibliography.
