In this chapter, we outline the concept of literariness, the "abstract property that constitutes the uniqueness of the literary phenomenon," and we define consequentially the field of literature, briefly mentioning the issues developed regarding the term. Then, we present the concepts of poetics, literary canon, intertextuality, and paraliterature.
