Abstract:
This chapter examines the nutritional interventions and strategies aimed at increasing energy, nutrient, and fluid intake in individuals who, due to pathological conditions, have reduced dietary intake and an increased risk of malnutrition. Specifically, it analyzes the techniques used to enrich diets with energy and proteins through the appropriate addition of foods or the use of commercially available supplements rich in energy and nutrients. Moreover, it thoroughly discusses dietary interventions to address various problems related to dietary intake, such as anorexia, early satiety, nausea, dry mouth, altered or lost taste, and oral ulcers. Finally, a brief overview of the basic principles of enteral and parenteral nutrition is provided, along with a quick and flexible guide for implementing these nutritional support methods.
