Description:
Abstract:
The book offers a basic introduction to theoretical and practical aspects of corpus linguistics with a special focus on Greek and Greek corpora. Linguistic corpora are collections of a large number of texts, stored in an electronic format, that can be accessed and processed by computer tools. Their widespread use in recent decades for the analysis of a wide range of linguistic phenomena has made corpus linguistics one of the basic methods, as well as theoretical models in linguistics. The handbook’s basic aim is to introduce the various types of corpora, their design and compilation, as well as methodological tools designed for text analysis with specific exercises on several points. Special emphasis is put on the analysis of lexical, grammatical and discourse aspects of Greek and other languages with the help of language corpora, while their contribution to the analysis of linguistic variation and several fields of applied linguistics is also discussed. The book’s content is interactively linked to sites of corpora such as the corpus of greek texts and to relevant applications with a view to improve readers’ familiarity with related concepts and practice in practical aspects of corpus linguistics. The book also includes a glossary of basic terms of corpus linguistics.
