Abstract:
This chapter presents corpora in comparison to other types of data from which linguistics draws and discusses the basic definitions of corpora. It also introduces corpus design criteria, according to which they differ from digital collections and debates the advantages and disadvantages from their use in linguistic analysis. Finally, it attempts a basic review of the historical context in which corpora were developed and introduces the field of corpus linguistics.
