Description:
Abstract:
This chapter introduces the concept of a wave, and the basic quantities of wave disturbances, such as period, frequency, wavelength and wave number. The concepts of phase velocity, group velocity and dispersion are introduced. The classification of waves according to their mode of propagation (transverse and longitudinal) is presented. The equation describing a wave in one dimension (wave equation) and the wave equation in three dimensions are derived. The concepts of oscillation coupling, degrees of freedom, normal modes of oscillation and their characteristic frequencies are also introduced through simple examples. Finally, the concepts of the energy carried by a wave per wavelength and the corresponding power are introduced.
