Abstract:
Issues concerning the library and information science field are presented in the book, taking into consideration basic principles of librarianship and documentation, historical developments as well as the current trends under the influence of information and communication technologies. The main purpose is to contribute to understanding of techniques and technologies used to effective organization of information in libraries and other information centres. Issues on processing, organization and management of information and data are presented in the book, taking into consideration existing situation as well as current approaches, trends and practices in the field, in Greece and everywhere in the world. Particularly, there are described issues like cataloging and description of documents (AACR2, FRBR, RDA), metadata (with emphasis on Dublin Core), subject analysis and indexing, classification, subject headings, thesauri, modern knowledge organization systems (ontologies, taxonomies, topic maps). Each chapter is followed by related bibliography, as well as indicative questions and exercises with their solutions, while the book also contains a table of abbreviations and acronyms and a greek-english glossary of terms.
