| Abstract: |
In this chapter the concept of the derivative of functions is introduced. After a reference to the concepts of rate of change and slope, the derivative number of a function is defined as its rate of change at some value of the domain of definition. Next, a problem-solving methodology with direct application of the derivative number definition is presented, aiming to reinforce the concept of the derivative. Following is the definition of the derivative of a function, an overview of derivatives of known functions, and instructions for solving related exercises. Finally, the geometric interpretation of the derivative is described in detail, with reference to various cases of functions.
