| Abstract: |
The textbook is an introduction, written in a simple style, to Aristotle’s views on beings (ontology) and on scientific knowledge (epistemology), that is, on theoretical philosophy. It offers a systematic and at the same time historical treatment. Historical in two ways: (a) it analyzes Aristotle’s objections to traditional views, whether Presocratic or Platonic, and (b) it highlights the contribution and influence of Aristotelian positions in the history of philosophy. The introduction has been designed for Greek university students: on the one hand, it serves as an academic handbook on Aristotelian philosophy; on the other hand, it can also be used as a general introduction to philosophical method. The educational aim is threefold: (a) to introduce ancient philosophy and its the problems that shaped its development; (b) to do so by using a simple style (with examples, charts, and a bibliographical guide); and (c) to train readers in philosophy as an inquiry into problem-solving. Finally, the chapters have been designed to function independently, so that parts of the book may be useful in any undergraduate course in history or philosophy, or even in the philosophy of special sciences (e.g., physics, zoology, psychology).
