Architectural space at the beginning of the 21st century
Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 11 chronicles the reconstruction of modernist architectural trends and the redefinition of space between the 1950s and 1970s, as articulated through the theoretical writings and built works of architects and scholars of the period. The chapter highlights examples of increasing fragmentation in architectural space—spanning scales from the local to the global, and shifting focus from the dominance of visual perception to a multisensory engagement. Space during this era is characterized by expansion, dissolution, rupture, and a rejection of centralized order. It embraces heterogeneity, transience, fragmentation, and uncertainty. The discourse also introduces associations of space with themes such as inhospitability, fear, and unfamiliarity. Through the lenses of phenomenology and psychoanalysis, the experience of architectural space is examined as a subjective phenomenon—one continuously shaped by individual values, meanings, and modes of perception.
