Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 6 examines the spatial transformations of Romanticism, a period during which space takes on the qualities of the sublime—conveying emotional intensity, fear, and awe in the face of untamed nature—as well as the picturesque, characterized by the unexpected and the exotic. For Romantic artists, space acquires a spiritual and introspective dimension, often functioning as an extension of the inner self or a reflection of mental states. Just as Romanticism, through its emphasis on subjectivity and emotional depth, broke away from the rational, ordered space of Neoclassicism, Realism—emerging in its wake—approaches space with a critical lens. Realist artists depict the lived environments of the working class and the struggles of the everyday individual, introducing a grounded, socially engaged spatial perspective. The chapter concludes with Impressionism’s redefinition of space, which seeks to capture visual experience as it is perceived by the retina—ephemeral, shifting, and immediate. This new approach not only alters the visual logic of space but also initiates its liberation from classical rules, ultimately handing over the construction of space to the intuition and vision of the artist.
