Abstract: |
This book offers a comprehensive examination of alternative socio-economic and spatial development models grounded in degrowth, community economies, and commons-based thinking. It critiques dominant paradigms while proposing participatory, inclusive, and transformative approaches to development. The analysis begins with the evolution of spatial thinking in degrowth, highlighting the need for context-specific strategies across urban and rural environments (Chapter 1). It then explores the epistemological foundations of diverse economies within the “community economies” framework, emphasizing the redefinition of “community” and the multiplicity of economic practices that challenge hegemonic economic narratives (Chapter 2). A major focus lies in the exploration of the commons as a socio-political alternative. Three key theoretical strands ‒Ostrom’s institutionalism, Autonomous Marxist critique of capitalism, and parity-based approaches‒ are presented alongside practical applications of material and immaterial commons (Chapter 3). These themes are further developed through a methodological lens, examining commons as complex, evolving systems, with continued relevance of Ostromian frameworks (IAD and SES) and insights from Autonomous Marxist perspective (Chapter 8). The concept of social innovation is also examined in relation to spatiality, development theory and the Social and Solidarity Economy (Chapter 4). This leads into discussions on participatory governance and spatial planning, advocating democratic engagement as a response to socio-environmental challenges (Chapter 5). Participatory action research is introduced as a method for fostering change through collective agency and redefined subjectivities (Chapter 6). The Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) model is presented as a strategy for leveraging local capacities and setting community-led goals (Chapter 7). Finally, empirical cases from Greece and globally demonstrate cooperative networks and grassroots initiatives using commons-based strategies to build sustainable and empowered communities (Chapters 9, 10, 11).
