Description:
Abstract:
Solar radiation, combined with the Earth's rotation around its axis and the alternation of land/sea, are the main causes of wind creation. Wind energy is thus the result of converting about 2% of the solar energy that reaches the ground into kinetic energy. This has been utilised by humans from ancient times, both for the movement of ships and for pumping water and grinding grains and other products (tree bark, seeds, sulfur, etc.), with the help of windmills. The interest in wind energy can be numerically understood, considering that the electrical energy needs of the USA in the 1980s could be met by about 10% of the wind energy available in the country.
