Abstract:
The chapter examines the characteristics of the distinct Jewish presence in the Russian Empire, the peculiarities of the Jewish emancipation movement in its Russian version, as it developed from the mid-nineteenth century, and the tsarist policies, which moved between reform and repression. It presents the upsurge of anti-Semitic pogroms after the assassination of Tsar Alexander II, the anti-Semitic violence linked to the suppression of the 1905 revolution, the organization of Jews into self-defense groups and their mass integration into socialist organizations, and the emigration in the 20th century of 2,000,000 Jews to the United States.
