Description:
Abstract:
Chronic health conditions and special needs (CHCSN) are central to medico-social care for children and adolescents, with a direct reflection on the quality of life of their families. Globally, since the 1980s, the incidence of CHCSN has been on the rise, paralleled by an increase in the cost of holistic care, especially with the introduction of new technologies. In Greece, notable progress has been achieved in several areas of managing their complex needs, while efforts to reduce stigma are still ongoing. However, recent substantial cuts in service provision underline the need for rational and sustainable strategies, which healthcare students must be prepared to understand and implement. This chapter aims to activate future healthcare professionals by highlighting the necessity of continuous improvement in survival and quality of life. It stresses the role of early diagnosis, appropriate medical follow-up, and the availability of innovative forms of supportive services that promote smooth social integration. These efforts should address and overcome barriers of fragmented or uneven development, as well as challenges related to both over- and under-diagnosis and over- and under-treatment.
