Description:
Abstract:
The importance of a functional and structured healthcare service delivery system for pregnant women, the fetus (whether through natural conception or assisted reproduction), and the newborn is reflected in the significant cross-country differences in health indicators. Among these, perinatal and infant mortality (IM) are the most sensitive. In fact, countries around the world are often classified as developed or developing based on their IM performance. This chapter aims to educate students about current conditions of care provision, which require the translation of theory into practice. Through 11 subsections, it presents modern clinical guidelines and best practices on specific topics (e.g., cesarean deliveries, management of high-risk newborns, neonatal screening) and provides a comparative outline of the Greek healthcare reality. Professionals in the field identify both achievements and systemic weaknesses, and propose collective, high-impact interventions for improvement.
