Abstract: |
In the book is proposed a methodology for drawing up studies for the conservation, highlighting and development of historic towns and settlements and the process of their implementation, through the required urban planning regulations, legislative measures and spatial interventions.
The proposed methodology is documented through a broad theoretical framework, which emerges from European and international organizations and shapes the principles and methods of protection of historic towns and settlements and introduces the concept of "integrated conservation" which includes in its objectives, the quality of life and sustainable development.
The methodology is strengthened by looking back at the long-term evolution of European and Greek legislation that regulates issues of conservation and management of historic entities, and by referring to important first relevant studies in Europe and Greece.
The common goals of Urban Conservation and Sustainable Development are highlighted, as well as their relationship with the concepts of resilience and circular economy.
Special topics are also presented such as the upgrading of public space, the reuse of historic buildings and the integration of new Architecture in a historic environment.
Τhe examples of studies for the protection, upgrading and promotion of historic towns and settlements which have been compiled under the responsibility of the author and based on the previous methodology, are finally presented.
