Abstract: |
In this chapter titled “Genetics, Gender, and Sexuality in Late Modernity” we aim to demonstrate that the perpetuation of the (social) "male-female" binary sex is rooted in a sexist and colonialist discourse. This binary discourse means that gender is distinguished between healthy and pathological, leading to the conclusion that 1 in 100 people have some form of DSD (transgender conditions or 'disorders' of sex development). The use of the term 'disorders' reflects a dominant eugenic narrative based on supposed evolutionary science, perpetuating a gendered binary that is arbitrary in nature, as interpreted by the colonial West.
