Description:
Abstract:
In the chapter titled “Engineering the Invulnerable Psychic Masculinised Being of the 1960s” we examine the symbolic significance of the “queen”—a man who dared to dress and act as a woman—causing moral panic in the Western world. With this, the Stonewall riots of 1969 are discussed as the pivotal event that catalyzed the emergence of the gay liberation movement and the ongoing struggles of the LGBTQ+ community in the US. However, this narrative overlooks the earlier challenges faced by the Queens, a group that included individuals from poor, black, and marginalized backgrounds within the gay community, such as drag queens, transsexuals, effeminate men, butch women, lesbians, and the homeless. This chapter will focus on rebellion, as well as on the formation of patriarchal science and the DSM. It will also include references to understand the patriarchal-colonial framework that resurfaced in the post-war era and has profoundly impacted, from the HIV-AIDS crisis to today, also Greek reality.
