Abstract: |
In the chapter titled “DSM: From the Pursuit of the 'Queens' to Gay Pride”, which serves as an introduction to the book's third part, we explore the historical background of white, colonial, Western science that emerged in the 1950s. We examine the difference between biological and social sex, which is at the core of the nature versus nurture eugenic debate. To understand binary sex in its historical context, we highlight how the concept of "social sex" - or gender - originated in the 1950s as a universally significant identity. It was introduced as a way to counter social resistance and communism and to promote the breeding of a socially better humanity, based on what was believed to be scientific principles.
