Description:
Abstract:
In the chapter titled “Unpacking Salpêtrière's Psychism” our goal is to illuminate the complex, interdependent relationship between Forensic Science and Psychiatry about (human) nature, sexuality, and mental illness. We explore this relationship, arguing that the establishment of the General Hospital in 1656 and, specifically, the founding of the asylum known as Salpêtrière—the largest asylum for the confinement of women—is not an independent entity; instead, it is inextricably linked to a patriarchal and colonial scientific discourse that profoundly influenced Greek scientific thought in the 19th century.
