Description:
Abstract:
This chapter analyses "fat shaming", which is essentially a subset of the broader concept of "body shaming". To understand the above concept, a broader discussion of fatness, which is the descriptive concept, and fatphobia, which refers to the pathological fear of fatness, is provided. Degrading attitudes towards individuals and mockery because of their body image is a key factor that leads to psychological and, more broadly, social problems. Commonly, such a negative attitude targets people because of their weight, which is why it is referred to as 'fat shaming'. In this chapter, both the general issues related to this concept and the relevant developments in Greece are discussed. It then presents the legal developments surrounding this concept and the practice of bullying that is implicit in this phenomenon.
