Description:
Abstract:
Sexuality is an extremely complex function with several intertwined biologic and psychological components, the formulation of which is affected by genetic, anatomic, hormonal, psychological, and social factors. The present work, the first Greek textbook dedicated exclusively to sexuality, firstly investigates the formation and function of the genital system in both sexes, as well as the disorders in sex development. It analyzes the physiology of sexual response (arousal and orgasm) and it reports the latest data regarding the effect of genetic variability (gene polymorphisms) on sexual function. It addresses the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the most common disorders of male and female sexuality. It investigates the issue of gender identity, in particular how gender can be a cause of dysphoria in transgender persons and how this dysphoria can be treated. It explores ways in which sexuality, a predominantly psycho-biological function, is affected by chronic psychiatric diseases, while it analyzes uncommon forms of sexual expression (paraphilias). It refers to the differences and problems in male and female sexual function that might arise with aging as well as to the interventions that could improve them, and it explores the importance of sexuality in the lives of persons with disabilities. It investigates the potential effects of hormonal contraception, hormone replacement treatments, and other pharmaceuticals on sexual function. Last but not least, it delves into the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the most important sexually transmitted diseases.
