Abstract: |
The present textbook is a Grammar of Modern Greek (written in English) which aims at familiarising intermediate learners with the grammar of levels B1-B2. The material presented in this book follows up the material presented in Modern Greek: Grammar Notes for Absolute Beginners (Kallipos, 2015) keeping roughly the same principles and method of presentation:
• Grammar points are presented in an everyday conversational style, which echoes teaching in class.
The grammatical presentation is not exhausted in teaching the form/structure, it is combined with extensive comments regarding use/function. In cases where a form/structure relates to various uses/functions, the explanation given is based on a common semantic schema which takes different interpretations depending on the context.
• The grammatical information is combined with practical guidance regarding Modern Greek grammars and dictionaries (e.g., how “passive” verbs are registered).
• A particular emphasis is given to the strategies learners should develop in order to handle complex phenomena like aspect.
• The presentation is based on numerous real-life examples (translated into English) to help learners fully understand a particular point.
• Grammar points are combined with points about communication and culture, which have a linguistic reference.
The textbook consists of 11 chapters and a glossary (as a continuous text). It aims at covering the needs of intermediate learners, but also of those of the advanced level. Ιt could, also, be used as a reference book for teachers of these particular levels and for those who wish to advance their knowledge on Modern Greek.
