In this chapter, the second important product of Byzantine hymnography, the Canon, is thoroughly presented. The theories related to its origin and the place it had and still has today in liturgical practice are examined. Its structure and special features, its relation to the nine biblical odes, its genres, its differences with the Kontakion and the question of the birth of the genre are also presented.
