The Akathist Hymn
Authors: Zervoudaki, Alexandra
Description:
Abstract:
The chapter deals with the most well-known hymn of the Church, the Akathist Hymn. With the greatest possible brevity for a text that has concerned and still concerns many scholars, an attempt is made to discuss questions of structure, metric, themes, liturgical use, and above all the great question of the dating of the text, to which a definitive answer has not yet been given. In this context, the proposals formulated from time to time regarding the poet of Akathist are presented and commented. The impact of Akathist is also examined, while a brief mention of its translations into other languages and into Greek (paraphrases, modern Greek renditions) and of the basic manuscripts and the most important editions - by pointing out the lack of a good critical edition of the text- is made. The text included is based on the version of Trypanis followed by a modern Greek translation.
