This chapter deals with the general characteristics of nuclear fission. Estimates are made with the liquid drop model. The additional importance of shell effects is realized in the fragment mass distributions and corroborated by the results of potential energy surface calculations. Last, we present experimental evidence for the fading-out of shell effects observed in the fission fragment mass distributions as a function of the excitation energy of the compound nucleus. |
