| Abstract: |
Heavy-ion reaction mechanisms are classified according to the entrance-channel relative angular momentum. We describe elastic scattering from the point of view of classical mechanics, as a guide to the limit of the semi-classical models. Wave effects manifest in diffraction patterns of Fraunhöfer and Fresnel type. We describe the general features of the optical model for heavy ions. Then, we discuss inelastic and direct reactions involving nucleon transfer. There follows a discussion of heavy ion fusion above and below the Coulomb barrier.
