Scattering and reactions

Description:
Abstract:
We discuss the Coulomb barrier experienced by charged particles in the entrance or exit channel of a nuclear reaction. We estimate the form of various excitation functions near the threshold. There follows a discussion of the coupled channel problem of a nuclear reaction. The importance of channel coupling is demonstrated with a simple two-channel model. We describe the general characteristics of the optical model and give an example of its use in neutron-induced reactions. We discuss the general characteristics of the solution of the scattering problem in terms of the S and R-matrix theories.
