The cross section

Description:
Abstract:
We introduce the concept of differential and integrated cross section andwe discuss the application of these definitions in the case of collisions between two classical spheres. We develop a simple strong absorption model and modify it to incorporate the (possible) wave nature of the projectile. We also apply the result in the interpretation of a simple transmission experiment to deduce the radius of the target nucleus. Then, we describe an accelerator experiment and give a gross classification of nuclear reactions.
