Abstract:
In this chapter, the transition of the offline social movements and collective action into the online age is described and the way large, sometimes informal, groupings of individuals or organizations which focus on specific political or social issues find their way of expression in the national or global digital sphere, trying to carry out, resist or undo a social change. The term online activism is also introduced, referring to efforts to promote, impede, or direct social, political, economic, or environmental changes.
