The basic concept explored in the 3rd chapter is that of communicative competence in all its dimensions – linguistic, purely communicative, textual (in the written word) – when examined by many sciences, which are involved in considering language as a communicative event and they give the communication a special identity. Therefore, central issues are the interdisciplinary consideration of language and communication as well as the main theoretical and practical consequences of these considerations as applications in language teaching. Therefore, the modern ways of dealing with language and communication from language teaching are presented in detail. The most important points of these approaches are presented focused on the main axes of every pedagogical learning activity: the goals, the material and the content, the teaching practices and techniques (the methodology) and the evaluation. Given that didactic research has been focusing its interest on the teaching of the written word for many years, special emphasis is placed on the analysis of considerations for the communicative competence in the written word (textual competence) and their didactic use. The textual theories are presented, the ways they deal with the production of written speech (particularities of written speech, production models, factors that determine it) and the recent, textual-communicative oriented, didactic proposals are described, as well as relevant research in Greece and abroad. These include the text-centered teaching proposals in general and in particular Genre based Literacy Pedagogy and Multiliteracies. However, it should be noted that the structural approach is an important stage in the history of language teaching as the first application of linguistics in teaching.
