Chapter Objective: Detailed description of Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) and practical presentation of the usage of HTTP URIs within the Semantic Web and Linked Data context. Contents: The use of URIs for unambiguous reference to any kind of "entity." Possibility of using different URIs to reference the same "entity." Advantages of using HTTP URIs (Uniform Resource Locators, URLs): accessing information related to the "entity" referenced by a URI. Informational and non-informational sources to which a URI may refer. Provision of alternative forms of information retrieval for URIs depending on the end-user (human or program). Ensuring unique management of URIs by the holder of the HTTP address of a URI. Namespaces in HTTP URIs. Prefixes as abbreviations for namespace URIs. Common forms and recommended best practices for constructing URIs for use in Linked Data.
