Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 4 aims at offering an introduction to the problematics of the theoretical and analytical treatment of the form of the Baroque instrumental fugue as a distinct musical genre. To do so, it does not propose a systematic methodological framework for the formal analysis of Baroque instrumental fugues, but offers a historically informed overview of the defining compositional practices that determine their generic identities. The chapter closes with a case-study analysis of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Fugue in C minor, BWV 847, in order to offer a paradigmatic interpretation of the ways in which these compositional practices inform to the idiosyncratic formal organization of a given fugue.
