Description:
Abstract:
Chapter 1 focuses on the fundamental structural parameters of tonal music (rhythm, meter, pitch, melody, harmony and voice-leading, texture, motive) in order to propose a systematic framework for the interpretation of its grouping structure. In attempting to address the systematic and balanced manipulation of these parameters as a form-defining procedure for tonal music, the chapter closes with the examination of the variation principle as pertaining to both the idiomatic continuous variations of Baroque repertoire and the characteristic sectional variations of Classical instrumental music.
